Decomposing Gender Differences in Bankcard Credit Limits

In this paper, we examine if there are gender differences in total bankcard limits by utilizing a data set that links mortgage applicant information with individual-level credit bureau from 2006 to 2016. We document after controlling for score, income, and demographic characteristics, male borrowers on average have higher than female borrowers. Using standard Kitagawa-Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, find 87 percent of the gap is explained effect observed characteristics between borrowers, while approximately 10 difference can be levels characteristics. quantile decomposition strategy analyze along entire limit distribution, show favor at smaller larger limits. The primary factors drive changed over time vary across distribution limits.
